HDMI connections

3G and 4K SDI BNC connections

HDMI connections are a type of digital interface created in 2002 to replace the analog connections that were used at that time for the transmission of video and audio.

It allows the transmission of uncompressed digital video and audio between two devices through a single cable. Its main basic features include the ability to transmit video signal in high definition (1080p) plus up to 8 audio channels simultaneously.

The great virtue of HDMI connections is the ability to be updated with new versions that add improvements and / or new features to the interface. For example, currently in version 2.0 is already possible the transmission of ultra high definition signals 4K and up to 32 audio channels through a single HDMI cable.

Differences between HDMI 1.4 and HDMI 2.0 connections

Currently, there are two versions of HDMI connections on the market, the 1.4 and 2.0. Their main difference is that version 2.0 supports 4K resolutions while 1.4 goes up to high definition (1080p at 60 fps). As 4K is just now entering the market, the HDMI 1.4 version is still very widespread.

HDMI 1.4 connections:

  • Resolution: 1080/60 fps and 4K (4096 x 2160 /24 fps or 3840 x 2160 /30 fps).
  • Maximum transfer rate: 10.3 Gbps.
  • 3D 1080p at 60 images/second.
  • Ethernet 100 Mbps.
  • Audio: 8 channels / 192 kHz.

HDMI 2.0 connections:

  • Resolution: 4K (4096 x 2160 /60 fps).
  • Maximum transfer rate: 18 Gbps.
  • 3D 4K at 25 images/second.
  • Support for working with HDR technology.
  • Ethernet 100 Mbps.
  • Audio: 32 channels / 1536 kHz.

HDMI Connectors

HDMI connectors are made up of 19 pins, each with its function defined in a standardized way. However, there are three different versions of HDMI connectors.

  • Type A: The most common, in the center of the image, used for example in televisions, monitors, video players, computers, game consoles.
  • Type C: Located on the left of the image and also known as Mini HDMI, this connector is used by portable devices such as some tablets or cameras.
  • Type D: The smallest format, on the right of the image, also called Micro HDMI, is mainly used in some smartphones due to the small space available.
