DMX (Digital MultipleX) is an electronic protocol used in lighting technology for the control of professional lighting devices, allowing communication between lighting control equipment and the light sources themselves. It is also known as DMX512 because this protocol allows up to 512 channels per DMX universe.
Each balanced pair represents a unique DMX universe with 512 channels. In turn, each of the 512 channels can be set to 256 different values. Each channel usually controls one effect of one of the lighting devices in the system, so that 512 different light effects can be controlled with just one cable, distributed over all the connected devices. We understand by effects the light intensity, the movement of a focus, the color of the light, the flickering, among others.
AES/EBU (AES3) is an interface used for real-time uncompressed digital audio transmission over a single cable. The signal consists of 24 bits of audio data transmitted at a signal level between 3 and 10 volts.
Both DMX and AES/EBU protocols are operated by balanced cables with a characteristic impedance of 110 Ohms.
